ArtsBeat: Smithsonian Unveils $2 Billion Plan to Renovate Its Museums and Public Spaces

A Danish architecture firm has come up with a master plan to renovate and redesign parts of the Smithsonian Institution’s campus on the National Mall.

Fall exhibits feature hubcaps, Virgin Mary, and African photography and art

My autumn-favorite exhibits don’t fall into an easy thematic group. I’d like to think they are the product of an agile mind and wide-ranging curiosity paired with an ability to contemplate material, ethereal and historic linkages that speak to one another across time. But it is just as likely that I have adult attention-deficit disorder, and my choices are proof of my disquiet. Either way, I continue to be just an everywoman museumgoer, trying to get a broad swath of interest, inspiration and perhaps neat little day trips into my exhibition experience.

National Museum of African Art hosts ‘punk in Africa’ program

The National Museum of African Art will host a screening of “Punk in Africa” Saturday at 2 p.m. The 2012 documentary explores the history and impact of the punk movement on the political and social climates of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. National Wake, a band formed in South Africa following the Soweto Uprising of 1976 is a part of that story and is known as the country's first multiracial punk band.
